In 1974, Bishop Worlock of Portsmouth and Bishop Paul Verdzekov of Bamenda initiated a twinning which has lasted till now.
Over more than twenty years ten Portsmouth Priests have worked in Bamenda, supported by our home Diocese; our bishops have all visited more than once; other priests and laypeople have gone out as guests of the Catholics of Bamenda.
We continue to support more than forty projects there, with the help of Bamenda Sunday Collection, together with donations from schools, parishes and individuals.
Three of the pioneers in the 1970s Father Ron Hishon, Father Peter Codd and Father rank Isherwood (RIP).
Other Portsmouth priests who have served in Bamenda include: Father Michael Peters, Father Eamon Walsh (RIP), Father Tony Gatt, Father Tony Day, Father Felix Muscat, Father Joe McElhinney and Father Michael O’Kelly.
Over the years, four Portsmouth Bishops: Bishop Derek Worlock , Bishop Anthony Emery, Bishop Crispian Hollis, and now Bishop Philip, have all visited Bamenda.
Four priests from Bamenda have served Portsmouth Diocese: Father Bonaventure Ndong, Father Bernadine Nsom, Father George Ngwa, Father Thomas Amungwa. Currently, Father Emmanuel Rinda and Father Elijah Fru who will be studying and living in St. Joseph’s Basingstoke and St. Edmund’s Southampton respectively.
